“Ancient Arts Of Survival” is the title of the band’s new and fourth studio album and will be released by Italy’s Minotauro Records on October, 26th in Europe and December, 07th in USA

Sunrunner is a heavy-prog trio formed in 2008 in Portland, Maine, USA. The band debuted with the album “Eyes Of The Master” (2011), a prog rock record with heavy metal leanings. Since then, their second album “Time In Stone” (2013), Sunrunner had solidified more into a metal band with prog rock influence, using elements of jazz and acoustic instruments such as violin, flute, bouzouki and percussion. “Heliodromus”, the third full length released in September 2015 by Minotauro Records (Italy), is the most epic one to date, defining the term “heavy-prog” as the bands genre.

“Heliodromus” got excellent response from European and UK press, especially because of its own music identity, as these statements show: “A perfect album!” (Pest Webzine / Romania); “Phenomenal Music” (Rock Hard / Slovenia); “A Great Album” (BadBlack Unicorn / Germany); “A real discovery for all Progressive Rock fans” (In Hard Magazine / Germany); “It takes a few listens to get into, but is well worth the effort” (Power Play Mag / UK); “A good listen and I wouldn’t mind catching them live sometime” (Rock Society Magazine / UK); “Heliodromus is an absolute ‘must’ for all fans of unconventional heavy metal” – (Powermetal / Germany).

The tour in promotion of “Heliodromus” included dates in USA, South America and Russia, where they’ve played at Belomor-Boogie Festival in Akhangelsk.
Back to the US, Sunrunner started to work on it’s new album, “Ancient Arts Of Survival”.
“We began writing the new songs early 2016 and spent the majority of the year composing them”, says the guitar player Joe Martignetti. “The songs are mostly all new ideas with a few old parts sprinkled throughout. The direction is slightly more straightforward than the previous three records. I think after writing ‘Heliodromus’ we realized we enjoyed writing music that was a little less eccentric and experimental… more reminiscent of our roots. So we continued down this path. The new stuff has a really good balance. There is more metal than prog rock. Less guest musicians and embellishments. But there is still plenty of odd time signatures. Lots of 5’s and 9’s”.

“Ancient Arts Of Survival” marks the debut of Sunrunner’s new singer, the brazilian Bruno Neves and was recorded in two diferent studios. All instruments and backing vocals were recorded at Acadia Recording Company in Porland, Maine – the same studio where the band recorded “Heliodromus” – and produced by Jimmy Martignetti with Todd Hutchisen as sound engineer. All vocals were recorded at Stone Studio in the city of Frutal, Brazil, and produced by Lucas Heitor.

“Ancient Arts Of Survival” will be released by the italian record label Minotauro Records and is expected to hit the stores on October, 26th in Europe and December, 07th in USA. Sunrunner’s new album will bring the following tracklist: “Dawnland”, “Tracking The Great Spirit”, “Inner Vision”, “The Scout”, “Prophecy Of The Red Skies”, “Distorted Reflection”, “Arrive, Awake, Survive And Thrive”, “Palaver” and “Stalking Wolf”.

“The Scout” is the first lyric-video out from “Ancient Arts Of Survival”. The video was designed by the great italian artist Tommy Antonini, same artist that has been working with some of the greatest bands in the current metal scene such as Soulfly, Candlemass, Machine Head, Blues Pills, etc.

Well, once again we have to apologize for the long delay. We all suck when it comes to working on the computer. We spend more time writing and rehearsing music. We don’t have anyone running the website…we do it ourselves. If months go by and there are no updates, just check facebook. Its updated more frequently.

So we never updated anything about the tour to Brazil either. Wow, we are a bunch of jerks haha!. Well, it was the best experience we have ever had! Brazil was beyond amazing! Every person we met was great! And not just those of the music community. People in general we’re amazing. We loved the country. The fans are die hard. What energy! The shows had the best reactions. Explosive. We will definitely return there. We give our warmest regards to Eliton and Susi Tomasi and Som Do Darma for the great experience!

After returning, we spent the Fall 2016 writing material for the new album. It is now mid Winter 2017 and the music is almost done. We have studio time booked for the approaching Spring. This record is going to be the greatest one for sure. The songs have a similar style to ‘Heliodromus’. But it has a different energy as there are only the 3 of us now. It’s going to be a little more open sounding I think. It’s hard to say exactly as we only have rough demos going. But the melodies and arrangements…well…we are very excited to get this next one out to say the least.

So that is all for now. We had an incredible Summer of 2016. And for the past 6 months we have had lots of inspiration writing this next record. So for now, we are on hiatus. Hibernating in the Winter, writing and recording. We have a few shows planned for the Spring. But once we get deeper into the making of this next recording, we should start to have a better idea of what the next tour will be and when.

O.K. CHEERS!!!

Thats right! We will be on the road in Southern Brazil in August. This will be our 1st international tour as well as the first time hitting the road as a 3 piece. The set is stripped down a little as we cannot perform with all the additional instrumentation like we could do as a 5 piece. But this incarnation of the band focuses on the core and basics of the songs. We are very excited to present our music this way…less bells and whistles and more metal! We are more than excited to be in South America! Brazil is known for it’s die hard rock and metal fans! We can’t wait to play for you!

Saúde!

So I just checked out when ‘And Then There Were Three’ was officially released. It so happens it was released March 23rd 1978…38 years ago almost to the day. The reason for bringing this up is that the title came to my mind when I was thinking of a good way to explain the current status of Sunrunner. That’s right folks….we are back to a 3 piece. Which is how we started…kind of. It’s a long story, but essentially its back to the original core.

Douglas Porter and Erik Neilson have parted ways with us back in December to further their career in their other musical endeavors. No hard feelings. We are all still buddies. It is not easy trying to make a living playing your own original music these days, we all have to follow our heart and guts. We all get it. We have had a tremendous time in this phase of Sunrunner. ‘Heliodromus’ being the culmination of our efforts as this particular 5 piece. We lived together for about a year and a half, writing and conceiving it, including 6 months of recording it, putting it together and releasing it. And we are very proud of that record!!!

But moving on….David, Ted and I, (this is Joey here), have been really enjoying the new sound. Yeah, some of the dueling guitar harmonies are missing. But we are rearranging some of the compositions so that the guitar and bass harmonize. In this alternate style, 3 major distinctions have happened.

1. There is a lot more space, more breathing room. It sounds bigger in a way I think. Maybe because we play a little louder to compensate for the missing instruments. And there is less competition from speaker cabinets filling the air with many sounds. Also, I am back to playing fuller chords in some places

2. You can hear the bass a lot more clearly which is great. Davey has a sort of Geezer Butler approach to the bass which is now more in the forefront.

3. It is more RAW!!!! We have received many many compliments from fans who say this with enthusiasm. It seems to be well received.

So we are going with it. Initially, we thought we would find replacements. And maybe we will someday, who knows? But for now we are going to take on this challenge and embrace the new raw sound. At least for now and for the next record which we have started writing.

Today is the first day of Spring 2016, so……
Happy Equinox to everyone out there!!!!

September 8th is the world wide release date for the 3rd full length record, titled ‘Heliodromus’, on Minotauro Records. This album derives deeper into the bands traditional metal roots and explores further into the realms of doom and power metal. From speedy twin guitar leads to slow dark lava sludge and a full range of vocal harmonies, this disc spans many of the sub genres in the metal universe. The music is still laced with prog rock….odd time signatures and movements, layers of instruments such as flute, violin, even an oud this time! The production is warm, analog and raw. The most epic release to date with the title track clocking in at over 21:00! Not a concept record, but there is some common themes based on the Mithraic Mysteries. A secret religion from ancient Greece, Rome and Persia. We are very proud and thrilled as it is our best work yet! We think your gonna love it!
